Can You Actually Sell?

Would you perform open heart surgery if you had never been to medical school? What about defusing a live bomb without any prior formal instruction? “Ridiculous”, you say. “That would be the height of foolishness.” Obviously, you are 100% correct!
Hold on to this thought now while we take things down a notch or two. If you make your living based on your ability to consistently close a high volume of sales, doesn’t it make sense that you should know how to sell? Of course it does! Unfortunately, good retailers out there may be shocked when they hear the results of our recent poll.
We asked “When was the last time you personally took sales training?” The responses were not encouraging. A whopping 29% of you have never received sales training and 46% of you haven’t learned anything about your trade in over a year!
In over 20 years of helping retailers just like you, we have demonstrated time and again that selling is predominantly a learned skill. It is not inherent. So if sales aren’t quite what you hoped they would be and your bottom line is less than “enthusiastic”, it’s time to step up to the plate!
Not sure where to begin? Here are five things you can do today to make sales training an essential and ongoing part of your business:
- Conduct an honest assessment of your team’s selling skills (including yours!). Observe customer interactions and listen to what is / what isn’t being said.
- Have everyone take a selling course (or re-visit the one they’ve already completed).
- Institute a daily sales training quiz for all team members to ensure you’re on top of your game.
- Start measuring and tracking key sales metrics (average sale, items per sale) on an individual basis to determine how effective you’re becoming at applying what you’ve learned.
