All Aboard Google’s Cool New Transit Tool
Published by David November 19th, 2008 in Mapping. In a world where everyone is going “green”, the importance of an easily accessible public transit becomes greater. People’s hesitancy to take the plunge into public transit is usually harbored by the fear of having to dig through maps and schedules.
I personally am a car owner, but have recently decided to start “riding the rocket” (Toronto Transit Commission) for a number of good reasons. Being faced with a long drive, escalating fuel costs, and the stresses of downtown driving, the only thing that was holding me back from taking public transit was “an approach to doing so”.
Sifting through route maps and schedules, I finally found the information I needed to get from my “point A” in Willowdale, to my “point B” in the downtown core, but knew that there had to be an easier way.
Google, a company who pioneers “an easier way” of doing things on a regular basis, has come up with a transit search tool which is a build-on to Google Maps. The tool has now graduated Google Labs and been incorporated into the Google Maps interface. This tool is not yet available in Toronto (TTC), but is sweeping transit companies by storm across the globe as they find a new way to reach out to a new hesitant yet curious “green” customer base. This is an excellent, free marketing tool for transportation companies, as they have the opportunity to gain free exposure through Google Maps.
Simply type your starting address, time, and your end address, and Google Transit tells you where to walk, what time to take the buses/trains, transfers that need to be made, etc. You really have to use this tool to discover just how cool it really is.
